Accelerometers are the main components of traditional vibration monitoring systems, which can record the response of a structure to various sources of excitation. The extraction of modal features from the recorded accelerations and the detection of changes during the monitoring period are key steps in well-established damage detection methods. Displacement measurements have the potential to provide more valuable and direct information about structural health in various applications, as they can serve as an operational condition index and allow the rapid detection of permanent deformations.

Abstract

Accelerometers are the main components of traditional vibration monitoring systems, which can record the response of a structure to various sources of excitation. The extraction of modal features from the recorded accelerations and the detection of changes during the monitoring period are key steps in well-established damage detection methods. Displacement measurements have the potential to provide more valuable and direct information about structural health in various applications, as they can serve as an operational condition index and allow the rapid detection of permanent deformations.
